PETALING JAYA: Parts of the ceiling at St John's Cathedral in Kuala Lumpur have collapsed due to a termite infestation.
Parish priest Gerard Thevariam said the incident took place around 2.30pm on Friday (Feb 10) afternoon.
"Thankfully, our Friday lunchtime mass was over and no one was hurt," he said in a Facebook post.
He said upon inspection, it could be seen the area was affected due to a termite infestation, adding that the incident caused some damage to the altar area and a few pews.
"We are working on fixing this," added Thevariam.
According to him, the church's engineers have checked the roof and they are closing the Divine Mercy wing for public safety.
In the meantime, Thevariam said the debris is being cleaned up and he thanked those who offered physical and financial help.
"Our anointing mass tomorrow (Feb 11) as well as our Sunday masses will continue as usual, and we will open our balcony to make up for the space.
"We look to your kind understanding and please continue to pray for us as we work towards rebuilding our damage," added Thevariam.
