Genting van crash claims another victim


PETALING JAYA: Another passenger in the tourist van crash in Genting Highlands has died, bringing the total death toll to eight.

Pahang police chief Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said Chew Chong Beh, 73, succumbed to her injuries while being treated at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) at 1.46pm yesterday.

“We confirm that the death toll is now eight.

“Four survivors are being treated at HKL and another is still at Temerloh Hospital,” he said in a statement, adding that the sixth survivor had been discharged.

On Wednesday, 14 people, including two drivers, were on their way down from Genting Highlands to return to Penang when the van driver failed to negotiate a sharp corner and crashed into the divider.

Meanwhile, in Bukit Mertajam, Bernama reported that three members of a family who perished in the accident – Ang Meng Hong, 62; her sister Lee Moy, 67; and sister-in-law Wong Ah Moi, 83 – would be laid to rest tomorrow.

Ang’s eldest daughter, Wong Yunn Wen, 42, said all their family members were saddened by the tragedy, especially her father, Wong You Hook, 62.
