Dewan Rakyat observes moment of silence for people of quake-hit Turkiye, Syria


PETALING JAYA: The Dewan Rakyat observed a moment of silence for the people of Turkiye and Syria following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit parts of the two countries recently.

In his opening speech, The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah extended his condolences to the people of Turkiye and Syria.

"I would like to express my condolences to the countries' presidents and all of the people of Turkiye and Syria, following the earthquake incident that had affected thousands of lives recently.

"Indeed, Malaysia is deeply saddened by the incident," he said on Monday (Feb 13), before asking MPs to stand and observe a moment of silence.

As of Sunday (Feb 12), more than 28,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands injured after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkiye and Syria on Monday.

Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under rubble, and the toll was expected to rise as rescue workers searched mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area.
