KUALA LUMPUR: The body of the second boy who drowned after playing in a drain at Jalan Ukay Perdana has been recovered.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Norazam Khamis said the body of the eight-year-old boy was recovered at about 5.10pm yesterday.

“The body was found amid piles of rubbish in a drain. We are in the process of bringing the body out,” he said.

It was reported that two boys had drowned while playing in a drain in Jalan Ukay Perdana on Saturday.

The search and rescue operation was launched at 5.08pm on Saturday.

The first body, a 10-year-old boy, was found at 6.30pm around 200m from the scene of the drowning.

The two boys were playing in the drain and they were believed to have slipped during the rain.

Earlier, it was reported that the search and rescue (SAR) operation had been expanded to 3km from the scene, reported Bernama

Meanwhile, Norazam said the fire brigade had expanded the SAR operation for another man, who is also feared to have drowned in Sungai Pisang, Batu 12, and Gombak on Sunday, to a 2km radius.

“The SAR operation involving 10 firefighters resumed at 8am yesterday to locate the victim,” he said.

At the time of the incident, the victim and his friend were bathing in the river before being carried away by strong currents following heavy rain.

One of the victims was found stranded on the other side of the river.

In Melaka, a team of divers from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) will assist in the SAR operation for a commando believed to have drowned off Pulau Undan last Tuesday.

Melaka and Negeri Sembilan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Capt (Maritime) Iskandar Ishak stated that the team will assist divers in areas marked by the National Hydrographic Centre (PHN) Operations and Borders Branch.

“The search on the seventh day yesterday will be carried out using sonar by the Field Survey Team from PHN Operations and Borders Branch.

“We will conduct dives at a depth of more than 40m after coordinating the movement of the diving team with an RMN vessel from Lumut, Perak,” he said in a statement yesterday, reported Bernama.

He said for yesterday’s operations, 11 assets from various agencies, including the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), have been deployed to the search location.

L/Kpl Edrin Baintim, from the Army and thought to be from the Special Forces Regiment (GGK), was feared drowned on Feb 7 while undergoing diving training 0.7 nautical miles southwest of Undan Island.

The victim went missing while taking part in the ‘Pari Harimau’ submarine course with six officers and 37 participants from the Special Warfare Training Centre (PULPAK) in Sungai Udang.
