KUALA LUMPUR: PAS is not linked to the Taliban movement and instead, it's a party for all Malaysians, says Kapar MP Dr Halimah Ali.
"People say the PAS 'green wave' is like the Taliban. No.
"I want to put on record here that PAS is not the Taliban. PAS is for all Malaysians," said Dr Halimah during her speech on the Royal Decree in Parliament on Tuesday (April 14).
"We (PAS) also have a 33-year track record in the Kelantan state government, where racial harmony is practised," added Dr Halimah.
The green wave refers to the rise in support for Perikatan Nasional’s PAS and Bersatu in northern states such as Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu.
The Taliban is a Sunni Islamist movement founded in the early 1990s that ruled Afghanistan from 1996 till 2001 and again since the end of last year, enforcing its interpretation of the Syariah law.
Last November, a police report was lodged by Perak PAS against DAP’s Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming for claiming that the Islamist party could turn Malaysia into a Taliban-like state if it’s part of the ruling government post-GE15.
Dr Halimah said that all MPs in the present Parliament session should refrain from politicising race and religion.
"Everyone, whether they are fishermen, teachers or students, want to see a government that cares about the sensitivities of not just minorities, but also the majority," said Dr Halimah.
Meanwhile, Dr Halimah said her Kapar parliamentary constituency is often plagued with perennial infrastructure issues such as broken roads, potholes, floods, inadequate healthcare amenities, among others.
She is requesting the government to come up with concrete solutions, as basic infrastructure issues are hampering productivity and quality of life in her parliamentary constituency.
"The buck stops here, the government must come up with holistic solutions," added Dr Halimah.
