Arts on the Move to brighten up Pasar Seni MRT station

KUALA LUMPUR: Commuters passing through the Pasar Seni MRT station may find their future commutes livelier with the launch of Arts on the Move (AOTM).

Seeking to merge both culture and transit, the public art initiative will showcase a curated variety of 12 live performances, three workshops and two art installations every fortnight from February to June between 5pm and 6pm in the halls of the station.

They include a traditional cultural dance performance and weaving workshop by the Selangor Mah Meri tribe, one of the 18 Orang Asli groups in Malaysia, as well as traditional performances from other cultures nationwide.

A unique art installation featuring vibrant yellow-coloured acrylic stands resembling palm trees along the stairs leading from the station’s LRT section to the MRT area, titled Sunnyside Up, will also be on display for the next three months.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the cultural initiative would improve the quality of life of commuters while bringing cultural life to public transport.

“The art showcase aims to brighten up the heavily trafficked transit stations while also providing commuters with a more engaging experience during their daily routine.

“This will improve the mental health of commuters while also promoting the diverse history, heritage, culture and food that downtown Kuala Lumpur has to offer.

“This is in line with the ministry’s goal of enhancing and enriching our public transport environment as well as the daily journeys of commuters,” he said at the AOTM launch yesterday.
