Foreign artistes in Malaysia must respect local sensitivities, says Fahmi

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil

KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign artistes performing in Malaysia must respect the sensitivities and customs of Malaysians, says Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications and Digital Minister said in a parliamentary written reply that the government does not prevent any international celebrities or artists from performing in the country.

He added that such concerts help in the development of the creative industry as well as contributing to the growth of the economy.

"However, it must be ensured that foreign artists must respect the sensitivity of the community in Malaysia such as aspects of moral values and local customs and as well public interest," he said.

He was responding to a question from Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) who asked the government to state its stance regarding the organising of concerts by international artists.

Fahmi said that when applications from foreign artists are considered, the Central Agency for Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes (Puspal) and the committee under it will also focus on the elements related to the sensitivities of the public as well as national security.

"All the set conditions must be complied with by the organisers and any non-compliance or violation of conditions during the event may be subject to administrative action as stated in

Puspal guidelines (GPP)," said Fahmi.

He said that every concert application will be reviewed and vetted through for criminal record, any controversial issues that could cause public anxiety, a review of previous concerts and the artiste's followers on social media.

Fahmi also said that the artist must not represent values that are against the local culture, lifestyle and practices, including their daily wear.

He added that with the establishment of Puspal, the Cabinet created guidelines in 2002 which are currently being enforced.

"To date, the guideline has been amended and printed five times," he said.
