Govt officer lodges report after receiving death threat from scammer over botched cat deal

MELAKA: A senior government officer has lodged a police report after receiving a death threat over a botched deal on the purchase of a Siamese cat.

The officer, in his 50s, claimed that he had received the threat from an online scammer who identified himself as "Marzuki" at 9pm on Feb 5.

The officer said he had dealt with the scammer on the sale of the cat, adding that the cat was initially offered at RM900 and was later discounted to RM400.

"The dealing was done on Facebook and I paid RM200 as a deposit through an online transfer to a bank account number provided by the scammer," he said.

The officer said he felt something amiss when he was asked to deposit another RM450, allegedly for quarantine purposes.

"I received a separate message on WhatsApp from a foreign registered mobile phone number, asking for payment relating to the quarantine," he said.

The officer said he allegedly received another message from the same scammer threatening to behead him when he refused to continue with the deal.

He then lodged a police report at Ayer Keroh police station here in the first week of February.

Meanwhile, Melaka Commercial Crime chief Supt E. Sundra Rajan confirmed that a report was lodged and investigation was ongoing.
