PETALING JAYA: The victim who was stabbed by a psychiatric patient at the Selayang Hospital has regained consciousness and is in stable condition after surgery, says Selangor Health director Datuk Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman.
In a statement on Wednesday (Feb 15), Sha’ari said the victim was given emergency treatment and underwent surgery immediately.
He said the patient is currently being monitored at the Intensive Care Unit of the Selayang Hospital.
“A police report has been lodged by the medical officer who witnessed the incident and the case is under investigation for further action,” he added.
Sha’ari said the incident took place at the hospital’s Emergency Department at 3pm on Tuesday (Feb 14).
“The incident happened so fast and the nurses and medical officer who was at the department took immediate action by restraining the man and handing him over to the police and further treatment was given to the patient,” he added.
When contacted earlier, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the psychiatric patient was brought in by police.
“Before disinformation becomes viral, please be informed that the stabbing was done by a psychiatric patient brought in by the police,” the Health director-general told The Star on Wednesday (Feb 15).
He added that such incidents can happen anywhere and said that the Health Ministry will review its standard operating procedures (SOP) for patients with psychiatric disorders.
“We need to safeguard our patients in emergency departments and our clinics. We have to review our SOP for patients with psychiatric disorders,” said Dr Noor Hisham.
The Straits Times reported on Tuesday that an agitated psychiatric patient had stabbed a middle-aged man three times while waiting in the hospital.
