KOTA KINABALU: Graft busters have arrested a civil servant for attempting to bribe an individual to retract a police report the latter had lodged against him for a robbery case in the Sandakan east coast district.
The suspect, in his 40s, who was working in the neighbouring Beluran district, was being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery following the report by the man.
A source said the suspect had subsequently offered RM7,000 to the man to get him to drop the police complaint.
Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director Datuk S. Karunanithy Subbiah confirmed the suspect was detained after he came to give a statement at the agency’s Sandakan office on Thursday (Feb 16).
"The case is being investigated under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC 2009," he said when contacted.
He added the man has been released on a MACC bail of RM10,000, with a cash deposit of RM1,000 and one surety.
He said the suspect was expected to be charged at the Special Corruption Court in Sandakan soon.
