First cruise on Belaga’s Sungai Balui

Journey to nature: Abo’s double-decker cruise boat.

SIBU: A leisurely cruise along the greenish-blue water of Sungai Balui was something unthinkable before due to its remote location near the border of Kalimantan.

But thanks to Graham Abo, who is from the Kayan tribe in Belaga, there is now a first-ever cruise along the river, which is helping to spark the local tourism industry.

“The idea came about many years ago but it could not take shape as I was unable to find suitable partners, and that was also when the movement control order hit the country,” said Abo when contacted from Belaga.

Abo’s cruise – called Shivau Cruise – uses a double-decker boat that ferries passengers on a relaxing 90-minute journey along the river before reaching the breathtaking Belanum Waterfall.

Belanum Waterfall, Abo said, is one of the most interesting places to visit within the Bakun Dam reservoir, boasting beautiful scenery.

Several small islands along the journey are also a sight to behold.

“Our boat will travel at a slow speed of between six and seven knots (or 30km per hour).

“For the adventurous, this is just nice for them to relax and unwind. They can also cook or have a barbecue at the front of the boat along the way. The boat is also equipped with a karaoke set,” he said.

“The river mouth is suitable for those who like fishing as it is inhabited by freshwater fish,” he said.

For those who prefer to ride to Long Bulan where the three-step Kelikai Waterfall is located, they can travel on the larger single-decker boat.

“During the cruise, one can see Semah fish swimming in the almost crystal-clear Paran River next to the waterfall. Swimming is a must if one knows how to swim,” he said.

Since the launch of the cruise few days ago, Abo has already received bookings from people around Belaga.

“More will come soon as people are very excited about it,” he said.

There are several cruise packages with the prices starting from RM3,000 for 15 people for two days and one night without food, and RM4,500 for two days and one night with food.

Those taking packages with food will be served local delicacies.
