Puteri Umno deputy chief steps up to contest top post in party polls

KUALA LUMPUR: Puteri Umno deputy chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi (pic) has filed her papers to stand as a candidate for the post of Puteri Umno chief at the Umno headquarters here on Sunday (Feb 19).

She said she was standing on her own accord and not with any teams in the party polls.

"I am standing on my own, not being forced and encouraged to do so by anyone else.

"I feel that many will be contesting in these polls and I hope for the best to continue the legacy of this party," Nurul Amal said.

When asked about her achievements, she said that everyone has their strengths and that she leaves it to the delegates.

"I do not want to comment. This is the party polls - we leave it to the delegates. I am more to add what is lacking in the party, to repair - maybe there is something needed to be repaired.

"I do it for the party. I cannot comment too much," said Nurul Amal, who sounded nervous at being interviewed by the media.

She will be facing a crowd for the post of national Umno Puteri Chief.

The Puteri Umno chief is Datuk Zahida Zarik Khan.

One of the big names going for the post is Umno supreme council member and Rim state assemblyman Datuk Khaidirah Abu Zahar, who announced her candidacy on Feb 16.

Umno is in the midst of its internal elections for the 191 divisions and 22,000 branches, including the divisions that were suspended.

The party’s new office bearers will be elected from Feb 1 to March 18, but the top two positions of president and deputy president will not be contested this time around.

In May last year, Umno amended its constitution to allow party polls to be held within six months after the conclusion of the 15th General Election.

Umno had postponed its party elections for 18 months after the 2018/2021 term ended on June 30, 2021, which meant party polls for the 2021/2023 term should have been held before Dec 30 last year. However, the polls were postponed.
