KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman plans to establish more Children Interview Centres (CIC), says Comm Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan.
The Bukit Aman CID director said currently, the department's Sexual, Women and Child Investigations Division (D11) has about 14 centres nationwide or one in each state.
"We aim to expand by having at least two centres in big states such as Sabah and Sarawak.
"For example in Sarawak, the ideal number is three CIC given the vast area of the state," he told reporters during Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri's working visit to the CID on Monday (Feb 20).
Increasing the number of CIC is important to ensure the smoothness of investigations conducted by D11 officers, Comm Abd Jalil said.
"In 2018, the D11 handled 9,839 cases, followed by 10,126 in 2019, 9,407 in 2020, 11,482 cases in 2021 and 11,186 cases last year.
"Among the top cases handled by D11 are rapes, abuse of children, missing children and children deaths due to abuse," he said.
On the working visit, Comm Abd Jalil said he discussed various matters with the minister, including the need for more personnel for D11.
"We appreciate the dedication shown by the minister in visiting the CIC and knowing more about the tasks of D11 personnel.
"We hope to enhance our cooperation with the ministry, especially on cases involving the D11," he said.
