KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 180 high profile cases were brought to court over the past two years, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the cases were taken to court by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) between 2018 and January this year.
"The 180 high profile cases charged in court were of cases of public interest and sensitivity.
"Trial involving 60 cases were completed of which as many as 72 individuals were found guilty," he said in a written reply to a question by Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Abd Muttalib (PN-Maran) in Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Feb 21).
He added that the remaining 120 cases were still ongoing.
Anwar noted that investigations by MACC were conducted in accordance with enforcement of the law and based on elements of proof of crime.
He added that cases with clear and sufficient evidence were referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers for prosecution.
On a separate question by Wong Kah Woh (PH-Taiping), Minister in charge of Law and Institutional Reforms Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said 58 initiatives under the National Anti Corruption Plan (NACP) were implemented as of December last year.
She said this was 52% out of the total initiatives monitored under the NACP.
Azalina added that another 58 initiatives under the NACP are slated for implementation by December 31 this year.
She said that 27 heads under the lead agency have given their commitment towards implementation of the remaining 42% of the initiatives.
Although the government decided on Dec 7 last year to disband the Global Infrastructure Anti Corruption Centre (GIACC), she said its functions were taken over by the respective agencies here.
"There was no decision that the NACP should be discontinued and its implementation is still ongoing as planned," added Azalina.
The NACP was launched on Jan 29, 2019 with the aim of implementing policy reforms led by the MACC.
The plan outlines 17 strategic objectives with 115 initiatives to be implemented by 2023 to fight against corruption in the country.
