New Finas chairman may be announced within a week, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: A new chairman for the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) might be announced within a week, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said the appointment was important, given the present vacancy in the Compulsory Screening Committee in Finas.

“For Finas, maybe as soon as possible, within a week. Because it is important for Finas to appoint a chairman, (who will also sit) in the mandatory screening committee.

“This is an important aspect, I will expedite this,” said Fahmi during a press conference in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 23).

On Feb 22, the Malaysian Film Producers Association urged Fahmi to expedite the appointment of a new Finas chairman and board members.

The association said Finas was unable to function, given the absence of a chairman and other board members.

The previous Finas chairman was Datuk Seri Zurainah Musa, whose tenure was shortened in December last year.

At the same time, Fahmi also said a chairman for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commissions (MCMC) will be announced soon.

“My hope is that it will be announced by March 1,” added Fahmi.

Presently, Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain is the interim chairman of MCMC.
