Floods: Number of victims increases to 5,878 in Johor


JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in six districts in Johor has increased from 2,162 people as of 9am to 5,878 victims at noon on Wednesday (March 1).

There are currently 1,575 families seeking shelter at 54 temporary relief centres (PPS), up from 581 families at 25 centres previously at the six districts.

The state disaster management committee said the districts hit by floods were Johor Baru, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, Kluang, Pontian and Segamat.

“Kluang has the highest number of victims with 1,952 people from 518 families at 10 centres followed by Segamat 1,431 victims from 419 families at 16 PPS,” said the statement.

Kota Tinggi has 1,156 people from 259 families at 13 PPS, Johor Baru with 1,004 victims from 296 families at nine centres, Kulai with 320 people from 80 families seeking shelter at five centres and 15 victims from three families at one PPS in Pontian.

“Rivers in Segamat, Kluang, Kulai, Pontian and Johor Baru have already passed the dangerous levels.”

The current water level at Sungai Segamat Kecil is 38.32m (dangerous level 37.30m), Sungai Batu Pahat at 13.74m (13m) and Sungai Lenik, Ladang Chaah at 6.73m (5.50m) – all in Segamat.

The water level at the river in Kampung Contoh, Kluang is at 15.49m (14.50m), while three rivers in Kulai also exceeded dangerous levels - Sungai Sayong at 18.93m (18.10m), Sungai Skudai 18.80m (18m) and Sungai Pontian Besar 12.01m (11m).

The water level at Sungai Pulai in Pontian is now at 2.85m (2.50m), and Sungai Skudai in Kampung Laut in Johor Baru at 5.60m (3m) and Sungai Skudai in Kampung Pasir, Johor Baru at 1.05m (1.0m).

“Roads in Kluang and Segamat are closed to all vehicles due to rising water levels along the routes,’’ added the statement.

The roads are Jalan Kluang-Mersing (Ladang Greenway) and Jalan Mohd Salim in Kluang, and Jalan Bekok and Kampung Tenang in Segamat.

“An exit road in Jalan Masai Lama, Johor Baru is also closed to all vehicles due to landslides in the area,’’ it said.
