KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is expected to soon get two new General Operations Force (GOF) battalions – one in Keningau and the other in Kunak.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said with these battalions, it would bring the total number of GOF teams to seven in the state.

The existing GOF battalions are stationed in Tawau, Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Beluran, while the Pangalungan post in Nabawan is under construction.

“The additional two battalions are to strengthen border control and other crime prevention measures,” he said during his speech at official launch of the state police headquarters building in Kepayan, near here, yesterday.

The event was officiated by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin. Also present was Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Acryl Sani said he hoped the quality and efficiency of border security would be enhanced, especially in curbing illegal entry into the state and fighting cross-border crime.

“I believe the Sabah police contingent can double its efforts in carrying out its duties with professionalism and commitment,” he added.

The new building, which has actually been operational for the past 10 years and houses two blocks of administrative buildings, a central lock-up, communications workshop, security post and workers’ quarters, took six years to complete, said Acryl Sani.

“This building was built at a cost of RM90.3mil starting in July 2007 and completed in July 2013, and fully operational by then,” he added.
