KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has taken steps to improve the skills and capabilities of teachers teaching the English language since drawing up the Roadmap for English Language Education in Malaysia (2015-2025).
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry had also managed to boost awareness on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programmes among students and the public through the 10-year reform plan.
She said the ministry would continue reforming the national education system based on the long-term Malaysia Education Development Plan 2025.
“The plan is developed with the aim of transforming the national education system within a 13-year period,” she added.
Fadhlina said this in Parliament in a written reply to a question from Ayer Hitam MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, who asked her to explain the effective measures taken to reform the national education system so that it is more competitive, prioritises STEM programmes and improves English proficiency.
“The plan aims to detail the much-needed changes in the teaching of the English language in a more systemic and systematic manner to ensure that (our) English language level is on par with global standards,” she said.
In terms of prioritising STEM education, she said the ministry had taken into account students’ aspirations through several steps, including through new teaching and learning approaches and strengthening the curriculum.
Its main focus includes producing students who can compete at the global level, she said.
