Cops nab 39 in raid on illegal online gambling ring

KUALA LUMPUR: A group that had been operating and creating illegal online gambling websites has been busted by the police, says Bukit Aman.

Police secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin said a raid was conducted in Kuala Lumpur on Feb 28.

"Based on information gathered from our surveillance, the syndicate was operating behind the guise of two companies that dealt in information technology and computers in order to hide from the authorities," she said.

Noorsiah added that the syndicate would also use their services to build websites and compile online gambling games based on the needs of their clientele in and outside Malaysia.

"The raid saw 39 people arrested, aged between 23 and 49. Five men and two foreign women were among those arrested," she said in a statement on Saturday (March 4).

Noorsiah added that a total of 30 laptops, nine computers, 47 handphones and three modems were seized.

"The police are committed to continuing enforcement action and investigative works to combat online gambling," she said.
