More than 700 kids identified for boosters


MELAKA: The Melaka Health Department is targeting 748 children in the Bukit Rambai area for measles vaccine booster shots.

Its director Datuk Dr Rusdi Abd Rahman said these children, between nine months and seven years old, were identified during an risk assessment exercise following a sudden surge in measles cases here, especially in Taman Bukit Rambai, Taman Rambai Utama, Taman Rambai Section 2, and Kampung Gedung Lalang.

He added that the number of measles cases in Melaka increased from only eight in 2021 to 22 last year, a jump of 175%.

“For Melaka Tengah district, measles cases increased from four in 2021 to 15 in 2022,” he said yesterday.

Dr Rusdi said in the initial stage, the vaccine exercise will be conducted in the Melaka Tengah district, within selected localities in the Bukit Rambai area, and will include surveys and the dissemination of information on the need for booster shots.

He added that the immunisation exercise will also be conducted in the Jasin and Alor Gajah districts based on risk assessments conducted from time to time.
