Twelve Kundasang families urged to move out of mudflow-hit village

KOTA KINABALU: Twelve families living in a landslip area at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu in Kundasang are being urged to move to a safer location.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said that following a recent landslide in Kampung Lembah Permai, it was dangerous for residents to remain in the area.

The Kundasang assemblyman said in a statement on Saturday (March 4) that Kundasang was prone to constant earth movement that triggered landslides and mudflows during heavy rain and it was important for those living in high-risk areas to take immediate precautions.

Dr Gunsalam, who was also state Local Government and Housing Minister, also urged all residents to cooperate with authorities.

Ranau district officer Jumain Abdul Ghani said the recent mudflow was due to an unstable slope on upper reaches of a hill.

He said they were monitoring the area and residents were told to prepare to be evacuated at any time.

Jumain said members of the village security committee had also been asked to provide situational updates every five hours.

"Efforts are also underway to find a new site to resettle affected villagers," he added.
