Miti to work to protect industries from climate change, says Tengku Zafrul

PASIR GUDANG: The International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) will conduct a continuous engagement with the industries to ensure that their investments are protected from any impact of climate change.

Its minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said that the government had been closely monitoring the flood situations in the state and will find ways to mitigate the risk on a short- and long-term basis.

"So far, there have been no situations that have affected any of the investments that are coming to the country.

"However, during this period, we will be conducting an ongoing engagement with the industry players, as we cannot take things for granted.

"There have been cases in other countries where industries have been badly affected by the natural disaster, so we will find measures and ways to mitigate it," he said.

He said this when met by reporters after the officiating ceremony of the Industry Excellence Award (AKI) 2024 at The Oasis, Johor Port, here, on Monday (March 6).

Asked whether the flood in Johor would affect its status as one of the top destinations for investors, Tengku Zafrul shared that the state has continued to be the biggest contributor of foreign direct investment (FDI) and exports.

"We don’t see Johor being affected; in fact, we expect Johor to continue its strong performance this year," he said, adding that his ministry would be announcing the full report for last year on Wednesday (March 8).

Johor had recently recorded RM63.9bil worth of investment from January to September 2022, followed by Kuala Lumpur with RM26.1bil, and Selangor with RM25.7bil.
