KUANTAN: A single lane of the Bailey bridge on the main road of Selancar and Perwira Jaya in Rompin was opened to all light vehicles today (March 7).

Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi posted on Facebook that traffic was limited to vehicles under 40 tonnes with a speed limit of 30km/h.

"I urge all motorists to always abide by the instructions displayed on signboards and to be cautious while driving,” he said.

The 42.67m-Bailey bridge was constructed to allow residents road access after the main road collapsed on March 1 after the river broke its banks due to continuous rain.

A 23m-stretch of the road collapsed, affecting around 12,000 local residents as the road connected them to Segamat and Muadzam Shah.

Construction of the bridge was done by the Public Works Department (PWD) with the assistance of the Malaysian Armed Forces, with 80 personnel.

The bridge was moved to the location last week from the Kuala Pilah PWD in Negri Sembilan and the Petaling district PWD in Selangor. - Bernama
