PUTRAJAYA: The detention of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) treasurer Datuk Mohd Salleh Bajuri by graft busters is needed to assist investigations into the expenditure of party funds, says Tan Sri Azam Baki (pic).
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner said the commission as a law enforcement agency, always adhered to regulations and laws.
"I leave it to the investigators to carry out their duties.
"They felt it was necessary to make the arrest and obtain the subsequent remand," he told reporters after attending the MOU signing ceremony between the MACC, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM) and Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) at the MACC headquarters on Tuesday (March 7).
Azam said the remand order was in line with the needs of the investigation.
"It is the discretion of investigators to take certain action from time to time depending on the case," he said.
On Saturday (March 4), Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the MACC had no reasonable reasons to apply for Salleh’s remand.
Hamzah said the party viewed the detention of Salleh as part of the unwarranted pressure against the party's officers and leaders.
Salleh was detained last week and remanded until March 3 after he was instructed to go to the MACC headquarters on March 1 to give a statement on payments by Bersatu to suppliers and vendors.
The MACC had earlier frozen several accounts belonging to Bersatu in January.
