‘Court charges against Bersatu president a boon’

PETALING JAYA: The court charges against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin are a blessing in disguise for Bersatu, as they have galvanised party members to speak out on what they deem is injustice against their president, say Bersatu leaders.

“We have come together. The accusations against Muhyiddin are a blessing in disguise, as the anger against these charges has brought us all together,” said Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

He added that the corruption charges against Muhyiddin had altered the mood of the party’s annual general meeting slated for tomorrow.

The members, he said, were angry with the slander against Muhyiddin. None of them was calling for the party president to step down, he said.

“As it is, we had expected to have a spirited AGM as Perikatan Nasional had won big in the last general election,” he told reporters yesterday.

Bersatu’s women’s wing, Srikandi, held its gathering yesterday.

The AGM of its youth movement, Armada, will take place today.

Ahmad Faizal said the party would organise nationwide activities to highlight the current situation to the people.

The government, he said, was “still politicking” and paying little attention to the people’s welfare.

Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, who was also at the press conference yesterday, said: “The charges against Muhyiddin will motivate us to work harder to convince voters to vote against the ruling parties in the coming state elections.”

He also accused Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of “cooking up charges”, saying that this should not come from someone who had once complained about having to face “political persecution”.
