SHAH ALAM: Six policemen in Serdang were detained for allegedly extorting RM150,000 from a group of Chinese nationals believed to be involved in a scam syndicate.
The suspects, including an Inspector, aged between 33 and 44 years old, were detained at about 9.15pm on Thursday (March 9).
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said they were detained following a police report lodged by a local man alleging the extortion.
"Initial investigations revealed the extortion was believed to have occurred during a raid on a scam syndicate.
"We detained all the policemen involved on the same day the report was lodged," he told a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters on Tuesday (March 14).
Comm Hussein said the complainant alleged that the amount extorted was about RM150,000.
"The policemen were remanded until Monday (March 13) and subsequently released on police bail.
"We have completed the investigation. The investigation paper has been referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor," he said.
He was asked to comment on news that six policemen in Serdang were detained for alleged extortion following a raid on a group of Chinese nationals.
"We will not protect those who have committed wrongdoings or criminal offences.
"We will take action without fear or favour as our priority is to uphold the law," he said.
Comm Hussein said police are also investigating the complainant and the group of Chinese nationals for alleged involvement in scam activities.
