KOTA KINABALU: Eleven vehicles were involved in a pile-up in Sandakan after a dump truck driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle.

The incident occurred at 4.25pm on Tuesday (March 14) at Mile 31 Jalan Labuk, Sandakan OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek said.

According to ACP Abdul Fuad, initial investigations showed that after the driver lost control, the truck hit seven vehicles in front of it that had slowed because of ongoing roadworks.

As a result of the collision, one of the vehicles swerved into the oncoming lane into three other vehicles, he said on Wednesday (March 15).

One motorist sustained a fractured leg and was taken to Hospital Kinabatangan while no other injuries were reported, ACP Abdul Fuad added.

He said the case was being investigated for reckless and dangerous driving under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He advised road users to exercise caution while driving and ensure that their vehicles were in good condition.

It was initially reported that eight vehicles including a bus with 29 passengers were involved in the pile-up, causing a massive jam along Jalan Labuk which leads to the main roads linking Sandakan to other east coast towns.
