Senior Sibu cop dies while playing football


SIBU: A senior police officer here has passed away while playing football here on Thursday (March 16).

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the deceased, DSP Gregory Emilio, 52, the special branch head, was involved in a friendly nine-a-side match at Tan Sri Azman Hashim stadium in Sibu Jaya when he suddenly collapsed at 10.15am.

The match was held in conjunction with the 216th Police Day celebration.

"He was rushed to Sibujaya Health Polyclinic but died at 10.56am despite all efforts by the clinic to resuscitate him," he said.

Zulkipli said DSP Emilio's remains were taken to Hospital Sibu for a post-mortem exam.

DSP Emilio became special branch head in 2021 and had been with the police force for 28 years.

He leaves behind a wife and four children aged from 17 to 27.
