KOTA KINABALU: A Filipino man has been sentenced to 24 months' jail by the Magistrate's Court here after he pleaded guilty to having a fake MyKad.
Mohamad Adzlan Said, 42, admitted to a charge under the National Registration Act that was read in front of magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun here on Friday (March 17).
The accused was arrested during an operation by the Sabah National Registration Department (NRD) at Sinsuran here at 9.30am on Thursday (March 16).
He confessed to having the MyKad which bore his name.
A check found that the accused's thumb prints were not in the NRD records and that the MyKad number did not exist in the NRD system.
The accused faced a maximum three years in jail or fine, or both, on conviction for the offence under Rule 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990.
The court also ordered for the accused to be referred to the Immigration Department on the completion of his sentence.
Adzlan, who was unrepresented, pleaded for mercy during mitigation, saying he had eight people under his care.
The NRD's prosecuting officer, Mohd Naser Mohd Nadzeri, asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence as the case involved national security and the country's sovereignty.
He added that the accused had been using the fake MyKad for almost seven years.
Mohd Naser added Adzlan had also used the MyKad before when he was arrested by the police for a drug offence in April 2022.
