Must treat every patient regardless of attire, says Zaliha

KUALA LUMPUR: Those seeking medical attention at government health facilities should not be turned away because of their attire, says Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

“Every patient must be given treatment irrespective of race or ethnicity. This includes the dress code,” she said.

She reminded doctors and medical personnel that they are bound by an oath to help those needing medical help.

“Every medical practitioner and personnel must uphold ethics. They have taken the Hippocratic Oath to provide the best medical care possible,” she said in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday in response to a supplementary question from Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (PH-Balik Pulau).

Muhammad had wanted to know the ministry’s stance on dress code following last month’s incident in which a woman who went to Kampar Hospital was told off for being “indecently dressed”.

The ministry, she said, would take immediate action in dealing with complaints to ensure the problem does not recur.
