STUDENTS representing the Silambam Korvai Malaysia Association brought home 17 golds from an international silambam competition in Tamil Nadu, India.
Malaysia Nanban reported that 40 students representing the association took part in the competition featuring 200 exponents from India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
The Malaysian contingent also won 17 silver and 20 bronze medals in the event in Kaarappakkam, Chennai.
Association founder and trainer K. Anbalahan said their success made the Malaysian silambam community and country proud.
Silambam is an ancient Indian martial arts that centres on the use of a bamboo staff.
> The daily also reported about alleged attempts to sideline Penang Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy.
In 2008, Ramasamy became the first Malaysian Indian to be appointed Penang deputy chief minister and he is now serving his third term.
His recent comments on the number of Malaysian-Indians in public service and the need for the government to address the issue has earned him brickbats, though.
