Malaysian Bar has roughly 21,570 members

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar membership currently stands at approximately 21,570 members, says the Malaysian Bar chief executive officer Rajen Devaraj.

The Bar was a creature of statute established under the Advocates and Solicitors' Ordinance 1947 which was subsequently repealed by the Legal Profession Act 1976.

The Malaysian Bar was independent with the aim to uphold the rule of law and the cause of justice and protect the interest of the legal profession as well as that of the public.

According to the Malaysian Bar website, each advocate and solicitor is automatically a member of the Malaysian Bar so long as he or she held a valid Practising Certificate.

"The Malaysian Bar is a creature of statute, namely the Legal Profession Act 1976. As such, the organisation does not fall under the purview of the Registrar of Societies.

"In addition, the membership of the Malaysian Bar, as at Feb 15, 2023, stands at approximately 21,570," stated Rajen.

This was to clarify the report by The Star dated March 18 and March 19 which had inadvertently reported that the Malaysian Bar had 9,000 members nationwide and that the Bar was under the purview of the Registrar of Societies.
