Dr Wee: Many large hospitals facing shortage of doctors and nurses

KUALA LUMPUR: There is a shortages of doctors and nurses at many large hospitals, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam).

"This issue must be addressed immediately. Previously, the Cabinet has agreed to recruit the medical officers by stages with a huge allocation, what is the current status?," Dr said when interjecting a question during debates in Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (March 21).

Dr Wee, who is also MCA president, also lamented that delay extending the contract of retired nephrologists at Selayang Hospital.

He said the delay had resulted doctors leaving for private sector as they were unable to wait any longer for extension approval by the Public Service Department (JPA).

"The National Cancer Institute is also facing the shortage of oncologists.

"The ministry must act immediately to overcome these issues for the interest of patients who need specific treatments," he said.
