Firefighters rescue five from fumes

KOTA KINABALU: Firemen came to the rescue of five men who were exposed to toxic fumes from rotting fish inside a container at a marine products processing plant in Sepanggar here.

The five men, including a 23-year-old who lost consciousness after inhaling the gas, were helped out from the container by a team from the Fire and Rescue Department’s Hazardous Material (Hazmat) unit.

A spokesperson for the department said the victims, aged between 19 and 38, were sent to hospital for further treatment.

He said the firemen received a distress call from the company at 8.30pm on Saturday.

In a sweep of the area, the Hazmat team found no hazardous substances, he said.
