Trader who sold fake shoes fined RM30,000

IPOH: A businessman has been fined RM30,000 for having 1,245 pairs of counterfeit shoes in a mall here.

Poon Yoke Lee, 52, pleaded guilty after the charge under Section 102(1)(c) of the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 was read to him before Sessions Court judge Azizah Ahmad here on Wednesday.

Poon was said to have had in his possession counterfeit shoes, purportedly of a Japanese designer brand, at a place in a Jalan Sultan Abdul Jalil shopping mall on June 9.

Azizah also ordered that all the counterfeit “Evisu” shoes be forfeited under the same act.

Lawyer Mohd Khairul Fairuz Rahman, who represented Poon, said his client’s wife would pay the fine.

Earlier, when requesting a lower fine, Mohd Khairuz said Poon’s business was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Poon has yet to pay the rent for his shop, which will amount to RM234,000 between 2020 and 2021.

“He is also taking care of his wife and their four school-age children. My client has pleaded guilty and promised not to repeat the mistake again,” he said, adding that Poon has been selling shoes at the premises since 2001 while the brand was registered in 2005.

“He also does not have any prior criminal record,” he added.
