PUTRAJAYA: Penang top cop Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain (pic) will soon take the baton as the new Kuala Lumpur police chief.
His transfer was made during the police force commission meeting on Friday, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
This is among several changes made to key positions in the police force, he added.
“As announced previously, the city police chief’s post was left vacant after Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim was promoted to Bukit Aman management department director.
“So the meeting decided that Comm Mohd Shuhaily will fill the position and the police secretariat will make the announcement soon,” he said in an interview on Saturday.
Saifuddin said a few other transfers involving state police chiefs would take place in the latest round.
It was announced that Federal Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay would take over the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) director position.
“The new NCID director will be announced later by the police secretariat as well,” added Saifuddin.
On another issue, he emphasised that the online sale of firecrackers and fireworks is banned.
“It is among the guidelines set by the Home Ministry and the guidelines must be adhered to.
“Selling firecrackers or fireworks online is prohibited,” he said.
The Cabinet lifted the ban on firecrackers and fireworks early this year.
However, only two categories – the Happy Boom and Pop Pop – are allowed.
On this, Saifuddin said his ministry and the police would monitor traders to ensure they have permits to sell these hazardous items.
“Any monitoring, inspection and enforcement will be conducted by the police and the ministry as well as other enforcement agencies such the Customs Department and local authorities,” he added.
He also advised the public to adhere to the law by buying fireworks from legitimate sellers to ensure the products meet safety guidelines.
