Major power outage in KK caused by attempt to steal electricity, says SESB

KOTA KINABALU: An attempt to steal electricity is believed to have caused major power failures in various parts of the city here, including the Menara Kinabalu state administrative building, since Monday (April 3).

In a statement on Wednesday (April 5) the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd said their officials found traces of cuts and burns on underground cables when investigating the cause of the power outage.

SESB senior general manager of asset management Idris Mohd Noor said the damage on the 33kV cable affected Menara Kinabalu, Alam Mesra, Likas and surrounding areas in the city.

"We believe this damage could be due to attempted power theft," he said.

He said SESB managed to restore power to the affected areas the same day (Monday) but power supply to Menara Kinabalu failed again on Tuesday.

"This second power outage is believed to have been caused by construction work along the main underground cable network," he said.

He said restoration work is being carried out in phases.
