King, Queen take rare chance to stop on Second Penang Bridge

GEORGE TOWN: The King and Queen accepted the rare privilege of stopping at the midspan of the Second Penang bridge while leaving the island in their motorcade.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah are visiting the state for three days starting from Thursday (April 6).

On their way to Kepala Batas, near the border of the northern side of mainland Penang and Kedah, the Royal couple were invited to step out of their vehicle and behold the engineering wonders it took to build the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge.

This is the longest bridge in Malaysia and the second longest in South-East Asia. It measures 24km, with 16.9km over the water.

Construction of the bridge began in November 2008, and it was officially opened on March 1, 2014.

It was named after the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the late Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah of Kedah, and assigned the route number E28.
