Senators to debate EPF withdrawal, collateral issues

KUALA LUMPUR: The motion on targeted Employees Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawals will be debated in Parliament on Monday, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. The Deputy Finance Minister said he would be present at the Dewan Negara to listen to arguments on the issue.

“We will discuss the matter at about 4pm. Senators will be given one hour to give their views.

“The two focus points would be on the need for targeted withdrawals and the use of EPF savings as collateral for bank loans,” he told reporters after a working visit to the Retirement Fund Inc (KWAP) headquarters here yesterday.

On April 4, Opposition MPs staged a walkout from Dewan Rakyat after the Deputy Speaker refused a motion to debate the proposed targeted EPF withdrawals.

There have been calls for the government to allow another round of EPF withdrawals to assist those struggling to make ends meet.

On March 9, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Putrajaya would introduce a new policy where those who are in dire financial straits would be able to use their EPF savings as collateral for bank loans.
