ALOR SETAR: A 14-year-old special education needs student, who has had brittle bone disease (Osteogenesis Imperfecta Type III) since birth, is grateful for donations totalling RM48,000 needed for surgery on both her legs.
Putri Nur Damia Danisha Abdullah, a student at SMK Alor Merah here, is thankful to the authorities, including the media and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), for helping her raise the funds.
"It is nice because many people came forward to help me with donations for my operation at the Penang Hospital that will be done after Hari Raya.
"The date of the operation has not been fixed but my doctor told me to see him again on May 11 to discuss the operation.
"Actually, the operation was to have been on Jan 31 but had to be postponed due to insufficient funds. At that time, I was thinking to do the operation then so that I could return home to celebrate Hari Raya, but it did not happen. Nevermind, I will be able to walk next year perhaps," she said when met at her grandmother's house in Taman Aman here Saturday (April 8).
The wheelchair-bound Putri Nur Damia Danisha, and her 11-year-old brother, live with their grandmother, Mariam Md Isa, 67, after her mother Amiza Badaruddin, 39, died of breast cancer two years ago.
Meanwhile, the student's plight also caught the attention of Kedah/Perlis National Savings Bank (BSN) director Zamri Ngah, who paid her a visit and presented the student with a donation of RM8,000 to help towards the cost of the surgery.
"The assistance is one of BSN's corporate social responsibilities. We want the surgery to be carried out so that she can walk again like other teenagers," he said. -Bernama
