Man found drowned after falling off fishing boat in Sepanggar Bay

Fire and Rescue Department first responders found the victim's body at a depth of 4m.

KOTA KINABALU: A ship worker drowned after falling off a fishing boat at Sepanggar Bay near here on Monday (April 10).

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they were alerted to the incident which took place in waters near the Sepanggar naval base.

A surface water rescue operation, assisted by the public, was launched in the location where the man was reported to have gone missing.

“The victim, identified as La Habusa, was found by our team where he was last seen at 11.02am.

“The 38-year-old foreigner’s body was found at a depth of 4m,” said the spokesman.

The body was later handed over to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for further action.

The search operations ended at 11.13am, the spokesman added.

In a separate incident, a 46-year-old man was hurt after the dump truck he was driving crashed into a tree in east coast Tawau district late Sunday (April 9).

The vehicle belonged to the Tawau Municipal Council.

Passers-by helped pull the man from the wreck before the responding team arrived at the scene along Jalan Sin Onn at about 10pm, the spokesman said.

The victim was then rushed to the district hospital in the department’s Emergency Medical Rescue Services vehicle, he added.
