KOTA KINABALU: The much-anticipated investigation report over the “Double Six” tragedy has turned out to be a huge letdown, with the families unable to fathom why the report had been kept under wraps and away from the victims’ families for so long.
“It’s only a normal report over pilot inexperience or negligence, (but) it doesn’t indicate anything that would be against public interest. So, why was it classified under the Official Secrets Act (OSA)?” asked Datuk Donald Mojuntin, whose father Datuk Peter was among the 11 killed in the tragedy.
“I don’t know how to feel. Some of my family members are really unhappy because they didn’t get the closure they thought they would get.
“It has raised more questions than answers,” he said.
He said it was mind-boggling that such a simple report had been kept away from the public eye – and worse, from the grieving families – for almost five decades.
“Every year on June 6, we go through the same thing – a lot of questions, conspiracy theories and other stuff but these have not been put to rest because the report was not published.
“This is an anti-climax, disappointing and perplexing ... why put the families through this for the last 47 years?” he said.
“The present Cabinet has done the right thing (by declassifying the report), but now the families demand a further probe – why was it classified in the first place?
“Whose interest was it to protect?” he added.
