King extends greetings to Tamil, Sikh communities

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah have conveyed greetings to Tamils and Sikhs celebrating Chithirai Puthandu and Vaisakhi, respectively.

Through a post on Istana Negara Facebook, their Majesties expressed hope that the festivals would bring peace, happiness and well being to all the Tamil and Sikh communities in Malaysia.

Puthandu, also known as Tamil New Year, is the first day on the Tamil calendar, traditionally celebrated as a festival by Tamils as the first day of the Tamil month Chithirai.

Vaisakhi marks the birth of the Khalsa order.

Separately, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also wished a Happy Chithirai New Year to Hindus and Happy Vaisakhi to Sikhs.

In a Facebook post, Anwar also expressed hope that the new year would bring joy to all and prayed that family bonds would remain strong in happiness.

“I call on all Malaysians in the country to strengthen and maintain harmony and mutual respect,” he said. — Bernama
