Lorry driver involved in crash that killed two teenage girls nabbed

IPOH: Police have arrested the driver of a lorry who is believed to be involved in an accident that saw two teenage girls on a motorcycle killed at KM121 of Jalan Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur near Kampung Kelawar in Tanjung Malim late last month.

Muallim OCPD Supt Mohd Hasni Mohd Nasir said the 30-year-old man was arrested on April 14 at about 11.55pm near the Simpang Ampat toll plaza in Melaka.

"From the interrogation, the man had confessed to causing the accident while making a U-turn. The driver also sent in a 24-hour resignation notice to his company on March 30, a day after the incident," he said in a statement on Saturday (April 15).

"Checks conducted on the lorry, which was seized in Kerling, Selangor, found damages and chipped paint on it," he said, adding that the man tested negative for illegal substances.

On March 29 at about 11.20pm, the two 19-year-old cousins identified as Mimi Nurwaheeda from Taman Danau Kampung Hassan, Hulu Bernam and Nur Nabila, from Angsana Flats, Subang Jaya, Selangor were killed when the vehicle they were on crashed into a lorry that was making a U-turn.

Mimi Nurwaheeda was run over by the lorry during the incident and died on the spot, while Nur Nabila, who was riding pillion, died while being treated at Hospital Slim River.

The driver left the location and continued with his journey after the incident.

Supt Mohd Hasni said the man would be remanded until April 17 to facilitate investigations.

"We would like to thank the public for forwarding information that was related to the incident to the police until the driver was arrested," he said.
