‘Shark Tank’ for Malaysian tech innovators in the works

KUALA LUMPUR: A reality television show that allows local innovators from different fields to present their ideas and technological creations and innovations to Malaysians is in the works.

The programme, titled Innovathon, is a joint initiative of the Economy Ministry and the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (Mosti) that offers participants cash prizes and investment services of up to RM1mil.

Mosti said the programme will be aired on Astro, among others, to enable local innovators to find potential investments to commercialise their products.

“Mosti is confident the programme will further boost the culture of science, technology, and innovation at all levels, and unearth technological talents and creative entrepreneurs in line with the Malaysia Madani aspiration, and also complement the local technology ecosystem.

“It will indirectly promote the proliferation of startups and the development of the local startup ecosystem,” Mosti said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

Mosti added that six audition sessions will be held nationwide to scout for talents before they are guided and assisted by qualified mentors in research, development, and innovation throughout the weekly episodes.

The show will encompass eight episodes, covering 56 participants who qualified during the selection process at the audition sessions.

Participation is open to all Malaysians, who are required to prepare a one-minute video clip and send it to inovasi@astro.com.my before May 7.

The Innovathon pre-launch ceremony was officiated by Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli on Friday.
