JOHOR BARU: About two million vehicles are expected to enter Johor through the land route between Malaysia and Singapore via the Johor Causeway and the Second Link in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
State police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said due to this, major congestion is expected at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex at the Sultan Iskandar Building here and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) in Iskandar Puteri.
“Traffic congestion is expected in 47 locations and we have also identified 27 accident hotspots.
“Some 700 officers and traffic personnel will be deployed to monitor the main roads throughout the state, especially at the hotspots,” he told Bernama after inspecting the implementation of the road safety campaign with Socso at the Perling toll plaza motorcycle lane on Friday night.
Separately, state works, transport and infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said all counters at the CIQ Complex and KSAB would be fully open throughout the celebration period.
He said it was to ensure smooth movement for travellers and to reduce congestion on the land route between Malaysia and Singapore via the Johor Causeway and the Second Link.
“For those who will be leaving and entering Malaysia through the CIQ Complex and KSAB, the Immigration Department and Customs Department are assuring travellers that all their counters will be open during the festive period,” he said in a post on his Facebook page.
Mohamad Fazli said the police would launch Ops Lancar to help with traffic flow, especially in urban areas and at the national border while Ops Selamat would ensure the safety of citizens including their property.
He said the North-South Highway would introduce a smart lane by allowing the emergency lane from Senai to Kulai to be used to address congestion there.
“The Senai-Desaru Expressway is also fine-tuning the proposal to use the emergency lane as an alternative route during congestion but motorists must follow the guideline,” he said.
In addition, he said the Road Transport Department has issued a directive that heavy vehicles carrying construction loads would not be allowed to use the road during the festive period.
“The Public Works Department has also directed that all road repairs be postponed throughout the festive period except for emergency works involving safety,” he added.
