GEORGE TOWN: It is still safe for people to exercise in the current hazy weather, but they have been urged to do it when the temperature is coolest.
Universiti Sains Malaysia family medicine specialist Dr Mastura Mohd Sopian said people should plan and schedule their outdoor activities.
She said if possible, they should limit their outdoor activities and stay cool while indoors.Dr Mastura said during outings, it is better to wear light-coloured and loose-fitting clothes to cope with the heat.
She urged people to stay alert and be aware of signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
“Seek medical treatment for heat stroke as it can be fatal,” she said.
Penang remained hazy yesterday as the Air Pollutant Index (API) hit a moderate level at all four stations.
The Environment Department website showed that the readings at the Seberang Jaya station hovered between 92 and 98 from 6am to 3pm.
They were slightly better at 82 at 6am and 83 at 3pm.
The API is categorised as good from zero to 50, moderate (51-100), unhealthy (101 to 200), very unhealthy (201-300), and hazardous (301 and above).
“Besides consuming more water, the public should take frequent baths and limit their outdoor activities,” said public health expert Datuk Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar.
He said that if they have to travel outside for work, they should wear protective gear such as a cap and face mask and limit exposure when working outside.
