Over RM76mil in zakat funds distributed to asnaf this year by MAIWP

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has distributed tithe (zakat) funds amounting to RM76,918,556.50 through various programmes and initiatives throughout Ramadan this year to help the asnaf group.

MAIWP chairman Tan Sri Dr Mohd Daud Bakar (pic) said part of the Aidilfitri Aid, amounting to RM31,007,000 had already been distributed to the asnaf group at the beginning of Ramadan for them to prepare for the Aidilfitri celebrations.

"InsyaAllah, tomorrow we will continue to pay the remaining contribution of RM1,000 (second phase payment) to all our monthly recipients, namely 30,000 asnaf families in the Kuala Lumpur area,” he told the media after the MAIWP Perdana Iftar and Aidilfitri event at the Darul Kifayah Complex Hall, here, today.

He added that a total of 278 Darul Kifayah asnaf children will receive RM300 duit raya and a set of raya clothes each as part of the Aidilfitri assistance.

"The zakat is distributed to various levels of asnaf in various ways for us to make life easier for them, including for dinner, iftar and duit raya.

"As for students of institutions of higher learning who are returning to their hometown, we have sponsored bus tickets. In the future, we will prepare a programme for hospital patients throughout the Aidilfitri festive celebration,” he said

Mohd Daud said the programme is an approach to let zakat payers know how their contributions are being used to help the asnaf group.

He added that MAIWP also offers 30 zakat aid schemes covering assistance in terms of basic needs, education, self-reliance, welfare and dakwah (preaching). - Bernama
