KOTA KINABALU: Some 600 workers at a construction project in the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) here will receive their overdue salaries, totalling RM3.8mil, says Mustapha Sakmud.
The Deputy Human Resource Minister said the contractor for the project has agreed to make the payments by today.
The order to settle the matter, he said, was issued following a workers’ protest at the KKIP on Saturday, in which three South Korean men were injured.
He said that according to the information received, the dispute was due to the delayed payment of March wages.
“The salaries, according to the agreement, were supposed to be made on the first week of every month.
“An altercation occurred after the workers became upset over the overdue wages,” he said.
Mustapha added that Sabah Labour Department director Wan Zulkfli Wan Setapa is acting as the mediator between the construction company and the workers.
