PUTRAJAYA: Plans for the digitalisation of vocational driving licences are in the works, says Anthony Loke.
The Transport Minister said the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and Goods Driving Licence (GDL) would eventually go digital as part of the ministry's push to eventually digitalise the nation's transport ecosystem.
"We have already completed the digitalisation of both road tax and driving licences with PSV and GDL to come later.
"Eventually everything will be digitalised," he told reporters after attending a PSV ehailing licence handover ceremony at the ministry's office here Tuesday (April 18).
Loke noted that for now, all vocational candidates would still be required to have a physical licence but the ministry would work with industry players to make it easier for candidates to collect their licences.
"We plan to coordinate with ehailing service providers on the potential of delivering the licence to riders without needing them to personally collect them from Road Transport Department (JPJ) counters," he said.
The ceremony saw the first batch of 300 PSV candidates receive their licences without needing to sit for a theory test after Loke previously announced the scrapping of the requirement on April 10.
Loke said that the exemption had significantly shortened the time required to get a vocational licence while also reducing the ministry's backlog of candidates.
"The time to get a licence has been cut from three months on average to little over a week now.
"This new efficiency will hopefully allow us to clear our backlog of over 2,000 candidates within the next few days before Hari Raya," he said.
